HOVERCRAFT
THE PRINCIPLE

The hovercraft principle is based on fans drawing air from around the craft and then directing it underneath the hull. This air is contained within a flexible structure, trapping it between the hull and the surface travelled over. As soon as the air pressure underneath the craft exceeds the force of gravity, the craft will rise up and hover.

Once up, there is minimal friction between the craft and the surface, so only a small amount of power is required to move. The virtual lack of surface contact means that the hovercraft is amphibious; it can move over land and water. Consequently high speeds can be achieved.
